Six Words

July 10th, 2008 · No Comments

Inspired by “The Short, Happy Lives of Teachers” and in a meager attempt to model Hemingway, here’s my six-word novel concerning my summer: “Read. Think. Type.  Read. Think. Type.”

I know…mine does not measure up to Hemingway’s nor to all the others posted on the above site, but this does sum up the redundant steps to, hopefully, accomplishing my goals for this summer:

  1. Read…for pleasure and for professional enhancement.
(See a previous post on books for pleasure.)
    Professional books:
How to Read Literature Like a Professor by Thomas Foster
       Mechanically Inclined by Jeff Anderson
       Multiple Genres, Multiple Voices
Purposeful Writing:  Genre Study in the Secondary Writing
                                          Workshop
Ten Easy Ways to Use Technology in the English Classroom
True Stories:  Guides for Writing from Your Life
Writing Beside Them by Penny Kittle
       Understanding by Design
  2. Think about how to incorporate some components of what I am reading within my lesson plans for the fall.

Never before have I read so many books at one time, but when my mind seemed to go on overload, I would just put the book down and pick up another good one!  So now, I am going to skim/scan these “good reads” for the nuggets that works for me and my teaching style.

  1. Type.  I want my lessons more prepared…yes, “begin with the end in mind” and “understanding by design”!  (Plus, my external harddrive crashed after Christmas…boo-hoo!  With no backup…yes, double the boo-hoo, so if you have not backed-up your files lately, please heed this word of extreme caution!)
  2. Type…some more!  I am presenting a workshop in a couple of weeks on “Thematic Literacy Units,” so therein lies the re-listing of “type.”  Unfortunately, I do work best under a deadline!

Now to bring my six-worded novel to life…off to read read, think, type some more!
